The Japanese company's latest FinePix XP170 tough camera now gives shutterbugs the option of wireless connectivity. Packing a 14-megapixel CMOS sensor, the XP170 sports a 5x optical zoom lens (28mm to 140mm) and is capable of a speedy 10fps in burst-mode shooting. And like any ruggedized camera, it features the usual tough specifications such as being waterproof down to depths of 10m, freezeproof to -10 degrees Celsius, shockproof to 2m and dustproof.
Upside
The XP170 features a new Wireless Image Transfer function which allows users to wirelessly connect to iOS- and Android-based devices (smartphones and tablets) using the free Fujifilm Photo Receiver app. We think this may be handy feature for those who don't like to bring too many memory cards or go through the hassle of physically backing up images to a computer.
We really liked the implementation of an LED illuminator on the camera's front as it allowed for more evenly exposed subjects when capturing closeups, compared with the harsh lighting associated with using the inbuilt flash.
Tough cameras typically max out at around 3 to 5fps for burst-mode shooting, but the XP170 manages a speedy 10 frames-per-second. This should increase your hit rate when capturing fast-moving action.
Downside
Although the XP170 comes with wireless connectivity options, it lacks GPS capabilities. This is puzzling, considering such features are commonly found in most rugged cameras these days.
Another feature that's missing is gesture control--a useful feature found in competing models such as the Olympus Tough TG-1 and Nikon Coolpix AW100. This feature allows shutterbugs with gloves on to make camera selections without pressing any buttons.
Outlook
Overall, the XP170 looks to be a well-rounded rugged compact with the ability to wirelessly transfer images. Users who require geotagging capabilities can turn to the non-Wi-Fi-enabled XP150 that shares similar specifications with the XP170 but comes with an inbuilt GPS module. Pricing and availability in Asia have yet to be confirmed.
